PVR Technology
My PVR Today
I’ve been interested in the PVR ( personal video recorder ) since I was young and my parents first VCR kept eating my Transforms recordings. I built my first PVR almost 8 years ago using an old TV tuner, some early Linux drivers and a cron system to record tv shows.
Since then I’ve built several PVR systems using MythTV and it was my platform of choice for almost 5 years. Most of my expericne was with the Fedora Core platform and the Hauppauge PVR cards.
I’ve since switched to the Roger’s Scientific Atlantic Explorer 8000 PVR. Its pre-built and the interface is horrible but it does work well with the Roger’s digital cable guide.
I’m also using a “Hacked” AppleTV for most of my Podcast and digital format viewing now. It does 720p ( which is my TV’s max ) and with XBMC ( Xbox Media Center ) is a very good media platform.
